FlyLEDs Part One

Still no word back from Vans on the wing arrival timeline yet.

BUT, the FlyLEDs box arrived! All the way from Australia!

The box is smaller than I thought, but a lot of stuff in this hobby is dollar-dense.

Goodies inside.

After unpacking (I got the “Works” kit), I was left with a ton of parts to start to put together.

Here’s everything from the box.

There are a ton of instructions online, which I’ve archived in the following files for some future builder in case the site goes down.

The-Works-2-Controller-June-24
The-Works-3-Lighting-Assembly-June-24
The-Works-4-System-Installation-June-24

The first step is to solder the white LEDs (covered in blue plastic in this picture) is the first step.

The left and right wings’ forward and outboard plates.

The next few steps attach the individual red and green LEDs around the landing/taxi light openings and the white LEDs, then to attach the green connectors and the large resistors.

It’s a bad picture because you can’t see the back side, but there are a ton of soldered components.

the boards are done!

Next up, the controller board. Here’s the blank controller board.

Ready for solder.

And here’s the final board with all the resistors, LEDs, microcontroller, DIP switches, capacitors, DB15 connector, and terminal for the landing lights.

Now how to store it?

The last step of the part 2 of the instructions is to test with a 9-volt battery.

It works!

Now how to store it? the FlyLEDs Website says this:

Another customer (thanks Dick!) has tweaked the files to separate the base from the lid.  He presents two versions of the lid, one with the LEDs elevated from the PCB and one with the LEDs mounted flush to the PCB as per the plans. Click HERE for the STL files.

I then googled who can print me a box from the stl files and ended up ordering from Craftcloud® | Streamlined Service for 3D Printing & CNC Machining.

I uploaded the two files and sent ~$25 and they should be here in a few weeks.

2.5 really fun hours today.

I'm too lazy to fill this out. If you are actually reading this, send me a message, and I'll spend some effort on it.
